Arrangement en noir et gris est une série de tableaux du peintre américain James Whistlers, dont le premier représente sa mère comme sujet principal.
En 2015, l’installation de l’artiste Quentin Lefranc rejouait cette première toile grâce à la mise en scène dans l’espace de grands pans de peinture. Bien que privée de son sujet initial, la structure reste reconnaissable. La peinture était alors « défaite » afin d’en faire l’examen pour n’en garder qu’un procédé. Ce dispositif permet de prolonger ces arrangements.
Aujourd’hui, c’est remettre en jeu ce premier exercice que propose le jeune artiste. Les disciplines, art et mode, vont cohabiter au sein du concept store parisien Tom Greyhound. Des pièces signées Etienne Deroeux vont se mêler à l’installation complexe sortie de son contexte habituel. L’objectif de la photographe Molly SJ Lowe va lier les nouveaux éléments de l’installation avant que celle-ci ne se décompose à travers toute la boutique. Cette corporation va conditionner la réécriture de la scène. Les arrangements continuent.
Les frontières sont supprimées. Quel est le rôle de chacun ? Quelles normes subsistent à la métamorphose ? Ce jeu de glissement de territoire sème le trouble et pousse le spectateur à reconstruire sa propre vison de l’ensemble grâce à des liens invisibles.

“Arrangement en noir et gris” is a series of paintings by the American artist James Whistler, in which the first piece represents Whistlers own mother as the main subject.
In 2015, artist Quentin Lefranc created an installation piece inspired by the painting more commonly known “Whistlers mother”, in which he plays with the piece in its entirety. It’s easy to recognize the structure, even though it’s initial subject is removed. The drawing is decomposed in order to keep only the basic construction, which allows a continuous rearrangement of the installation.
For the upcoming exhibition, the young artist puts his installation back into play. Art and fashion will work in harmony within the Parisian concept store Tom Greyhound. Some of the designers, Etienne DEROEUXs, signature pieces will blend in with the complex artwork, taken out of it’s regular context. Photographer Molly SJ LOWE linked the new elements in the installation before the decomposition in the shop. This collaboration is the final component in the continuous rearrangements.
Borders no longer exist. Which role do we each play? What will survive after the metamorphosis ? This playful relationship between art and fashion, what was and what is, leaves the viewer with only their own imagination, to create their own vision of the artwork.
